Pacesetter Drill Team History
Getting Started-
North Mesquite High School opened in 1969 and Mrs. Lavonne Wells created and designed the Pacesetters Drill Team.
From Mrs. Lavonne Wells: “As the Originator of The Pacesetters, I named the group, held the first tryouts, designed the first uniform, went to first summer camp at Kilgore, put the ladies on the field for the first ...performance, had the first Stage Show. That was the year for FIRSTS! We set the standards and pace for others to follow. Julius Vasallo was the Band Director, he wrote the school song. John Bud Campbell was the Principal and it was the first year of classes for North Mesquite High School. I was the Pacesetter Director for 3 of the most wonderful years of my life.”
Uniforms-
From Becky Williams Allen [Pacesetter 1969-72]: Lavonne Wells designed the uniform and there were several "looks". But, the basic uniform had a jacket overlay and the hat was patterned after a jockey hat. We also carried a quirt (riding whip) with that uniform. We were patterned after the pacesetter of a horse race.....the jockey in the two wheeled horse drawn cart that sets the pace for the race.
